Welcome to Hanham Vasectomy Service
Access to this service is via referral from your registered GP
Who
We Are
Hanham Vasectomy Service delivers NHS funded vasectomy procedures to patients registered to GP practices within Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG). The service forms parts of the wider Hanham Health organisation and is overseen by two of its GP Partners who are also experienced primary care surgeons.
Vasectomy Services
Referral
Patients considering vasectomy as a family planning method should seek advice and support from their registered GP.
After discussion about various contraception options and suitability checks, the GP may then refer the patient to Hanham Vasectomy Service.
Patients can only access this service via a referral from their registered GP.
Counselling and Advice
Counselling and Advice
Following referral, patients will be invited to attend a telephone counselling appointment during which an experienced and supportive counsellor will explain the procedure in detail, including the risks, benefits and alternatives.
The counsellor will determine the suitability of the patient for the procedure, taking into consideration their current circumstances and future plans.
Patients are then given a two-week period during which they can consider their options and decide if vasectomy is the right choice for them.
Procedure and Aftercare
The vasectomy procedure is done at one of three locations, depending on accessibility for the patient. Each location has a suitable surgical suite and post-operative recovery room to ensure the highest standard of clinical and patient care.
Vasectomy, also known as male sterilisation, is an effective and permanent form of contraception that involves a small operation to cut and seal a section of each vas deferens.
Further details about the procedure, aftercare and testing can be found below
Feedback
We ask all patients to complete a patient survey within 24 hours of their procedure as part of our patient satisfaction and clinical audit processes.
We also ask all patients to complete a post-vasectomy questionnaire 16 weeks after their procedure.
