Clinics and Services

Baby Immunisation Clinic

Baby immunisations commence at 8 weeks old and follow a programme of immunisations as recommended by the National guidelines. You will be sent an invitation when your baby is due their first immunisations.

Every child under the age of 5 will have a designated Health Visitor. They offer emotional support, health care and lifestyle advice to young families. This could be in your own home or in a variety of alternative settings, including the surgery or children’s centres. They work closely with the doctors, having regular meetings to ensure good co-ordination of your child’s care.

Routine Checks by the Doctor

You will be asked to take your child for routine check-ups with the doctor at 7 weeks. If you have any worries or queries concerning your child you can, of course, discuss them with the doctor or health visitor at any time.

Blood Clinic

We have Blood clinics running at Hanham Health, and they operate Monday to Friday between 8:10am to 12:20pm. These are busy clinics, and so they are by appointment only.

See how to request an appointment

All routine blood test requests by the GP are handled in these clinics, as are any hospital requests. Please note that if you have a hospital request, you will need to bring this into the surgery in writing.

Certain blood tests need to be carried out at specific times.

Examples are:

  • Blood levels for certain drugs e.g. Digoxin or Lithium need to be taken at certain times you will need to check this with the clinic or your doctor.
  • Fasting samples – your doctor or nurse may request a fasting blood sample these are usually for Glucose or Cholesterol. If a fasting sample is required, patients must not eat from midnight the previous evening and can only drink water, black tea or black coffee (but no sugar!) Therefore it is advisable to make one of these earlier in the morning.

Cervical Screening: Smear Tests

Women aged between 24 and 64 should have a cervical screening every 3 to 5 years to help prevent cervical cancer. The screening is quick and painless and can be done here in the practice.

If you are aged over 24 and have never had a smear test, or if it has been more than 3 to 5 years since your last screening, you should arrange an appointment with our Practice Nurse. You should not have the test while you are having a period or in the 4 days before or after your period as this can affect the sample.

Health Promotion

Promoting good health is very important and we try to make the most up-to-date information available to our patients via this site and in the ‘Health Information Area’ in the waiting room at the surgery.

All new patients on registering with the surgery will be asked to complete a health questionnaire. This information will then be reviewed and an appointment (either face to face or remotely) will be offered if necessary. Please provide as much information as possible.

Minor Injuries Service

We now provide a Minor Injuries Service for injuries including: sprains and strains, cuts and grazes, suspected minor fractures, minor burns and scalds, bites, minor eye injuries and minor head injuries.

This is on a walk-in basis during our normal surgery opening times. Therefore, if you experience any of the above, please visit the Surgery and we will fit you in as soon as we can.

Should you experience these injuries outside of our normal opening hours, please ring NHS 111 for advice. Calls to 111 are free from any landline or mobile.

It should be noted that this service is a pilot which is expected to run for 2 years. It is intended to complement existing minor injuries services at Yate West Gate Centre and Southmead Hospital and so we will continue to work in collaboration with them to treat your minor injuries. Feedback, as always, is very welcome. Forms to provide this feedback will be issued during your appointment.
